Rusell Thomas, who was born in Miami, Florida, did not find his voice until the age of 18, when a vocal coach advised him pursue a career in singing. He went on to study music at the conservatory and sang in the Miami Opera chorus as an undergraduate. Thomas went on to perform with the Seattle Opera Young Artist Programme, the Florida Grand Opera, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and the Sarasota Opera as a young artist. At the Metropolitan Opera, he has performed as Tito in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Boheme, and as Gabriele Adorno in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Russell Thomas, an American tenor, is today one of the most in-demand tenors of his age, having established himself in important lyric parts such as Don Carlo, Manrico (Il trovatore), Don Alvaro (La forza del destino), and Pollione (Norma). Thomas, a Lindemann Programme graduate, recently returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Rodolfo (La bohème) and Ismaele (Nabucco), the latter of which was televised internationally via The Met’s ‘Live in HD’ series. This season, he returns as Don Carlo in David McVicar’s production, conducted by Carlo Rizzi.

Thomas has worked with acclaimed director Peter Sellars for several years, most recently as Lazarus in John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary in world premiere performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, which is now available on Deutsche Grammophon. This collaboration continues at the Salzburger Festspiele, where he made his debut in the title role of La clemenza di Tito under Teodor Currentzis, and where he will return in a new staging of Idomeneo in the 2018/19 season.
