Kazuyoshi played for the Japan national team from 1990 to 2000, and was the first Japanese recipient of the IFFHS Asia’s Footballer of the Year award. Coincidentally, Miura’s rise to fame in Japan was met with the launch of the J.League in 1993, made him arguably Japan’s first superstar in football.
In 1997, Miura scored fourteen times for Japan during the 1998 World Cup qualifys, leading the Samurai Blue to their first ever World Cup finals. Despite all this, Miura was controversially left out of the squad. He played his last national team match in the year 2000, and finished with the second-most career goals in Japanese national team history with 55 goals in 89 matches.
