Mathew Baynton is an English actor, writer, comedian, singer, and musician best known as a member of the British Horrible Histories troupe, in which he featured in the television series Horrible Histories; he has also appeared in Yonderland and Ghosts. Mathew John Baynton was born on November 18, 1980. Baynton grew raised in the Essex town of Southend-on-Sea. He attended Southend High School for Boys. He graduated with honours from the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama and went on to study clowning at the École Philippe Gaulier in Paris. In an interview with Metro, Baynton stated his motivation: “The performing instinct came from making my family laugh, so I’ve always been drawn to the funny side of things.” Comedy is quite satisfying.”

Baynton appeared in the first five seasons of the hit children’s television series Horrible Histories as a singer, actor, and sometimes writer. Baynton, along with the other five Horrible Histories cast members, is the creator, writer, and star of Yonderland, a family fantasy comedy series that aired on Sky1 on November 10, 2013. He co-starred in Bill, a BBC family comedy film largely based on the early life of William Shakespeare, who travels to London to pursue his ambition of becoming a writer. In 2019, the cast regrouped to produce the BBC series Ghosts, in which Baynton played a romantic poet named Thomas Thorne.

Baynton collaborated with friend and fellow Gavin & Stacey alumnus James Corden to produce, write, and appear in The Wrong Mans, a BBC Two comedy-thriller that debuted in the fall 2013. The series is co-produced by Hulu.com, an internet television provider in the United States, where it debuted in November 2013. The original six-part series was a critical and economic success, and a two-part sequel was shown in December 2014.

He performed in a music video for Mercury Prize-nominated band The Bees in 2009. Baynton performed in the world premiere of Tom Basden’s piece Holes at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In the summer of 2014, he resumed his role as Gus in a London production of the same play. Baynton starred as Jamie Winton and his brother Ariel Conroy in Sky1’s science fiction comedy-drama miniseries You, Me, and the Apocalypse in late 2015.
