She spent her early years in Lake Forest, Illinois, where she developed an interest in home renovation. She had her high school education at Lake Orion High School. She graduated with a degree in Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

She worked as a project manager and designer for many different companies. She began blogging in 2007 where she shared her experiences renovating her first home, a 1910 Craftsman bungalow in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her blog ushered her to fame as she got the offer to host her own show on DIY Network due to her blog.

She began Rehab Addict in 2010 which became famous due to her hands on approach formula and her ability to transform historic houses into beautiful and modern homes.
