Raza Jaffrey is a British singer and actor. He is well known for his appearances as Zafar Younis in BBC One’s spy thriller Spooks (2004-2007) and Neal Hudson in CBS’s medical drama Code Black (2015). Raza Jaffrey was born on May 28, 1973, in Merseyside, Liverpool. His biological father Hyder Jaffrey was born in Agra, India. He later relocated to Pakistan as a result of the change in political borders in India. Later, he relocated to the UK to be trained in the merchant marine. Within the shortest possible time, he rose to the rank of captain.

In the 1950s, Hyder fell in love with Irish Catholic Liverpudlian Joan Bradshaw, and the two spent ten years living in Karachi, Pakistan. Raza was the youngest of the four children the couple produced after getting married in 1962. He attended Dulwich College from 1986 to 1991, he even studied with actors Rupert Penry-Jones and Chiwetel Ejiofor who were also natives of London.

Jaffrey had an initial plan of wanting to join the Royal Air Force as a pilot, and after passing the required admission examinations, he enrolled at Manchester University to study English and Drama to earn a degree so he could begin officer training. However, he developed an interest in performing while at college and, after graduating, entered the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Jaffrey performed in numerous plays while still in college, including The London Vertigo by Brian Friel at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Henry VIII and A Comedy of Errors at the Pendley Open Air Shakespeare Festival. He also took part in America’s Next Top Model as well. He worked with Royal Shakespeare Company chief associate director Gregory Doran during his last year at Manchester, which he has mentioned as one of the factors that inspired him to apply to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and ultimately pursue a career as an actor. He was the jazz-funk band’s lead singer all during his tenure at Manchester.

Jaffrey departed Spooks to join the BBC One drama series Mistresses. He played Gaurav in Sex and the City 2 in 2010. He subsequently went on to feature in the BBC1 comedy Accidental Farmer as Mike, the unfaithful lover.

Jaffrey has participated in several concert performances and is still singing today. She has played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the London Palladium and with the BBC Concert Orchestra on BBC Radio 2. He was also the originator and co-producer of the dance programme RED, a celebration of several dance and movement genres that have Indian elements. He performed at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg. In Chicago, he portrayed Billy Flynn at the London Garrick Theatre.
