Kay was born on born 9 April 1969 at St Pancras, London, and is the son of actor Richard Kay (1937–1985), and the grandson of entertainer Arthur Kay (died 1970). He is married to actress Nicola Walker, with whom he has a son called Kay.

He has a younger brother called Adam who is a businessman. His grandfather, Arthur Kay, who died in 1970, was a prominent star in Northumbria community theatre, and his father was the actor Richard Kay, who died in a car accident in 1985 before he could see Barnaby carry on the family legacy.

Barnaby attended drama school but dropped out before finishing because his father’s agent secured him an audition with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which he passed, debuting with them in the play ‘A Jovial Crew’ and returning to work with them on several occasions. He has since worked in many media, including television parts in ‘Holby City’, ‘Midsomer Murders’ and ‘New Tricks’.
